A shape drawn in Glaxnimate and reshaped frame by frame is loaded back into Shotcut as a mask. Because the shape moves with the walking figure, the clip underneath is uncovered exactly where she has already been. Two separate applications, one filter, one checkbox that has to be ticked at the end.

Not a transition preset and not a plugin. Two clips stacked on top of each other, and a hand-drawn shape that changes on every single frame so that the hole it punches in the upper clip keeps pace with a moving subject.
A static mask gives you a shape that sits still while the footage moves past it. Here the shape is redrawn on every frame, so it stays locked to the walking figure. That relationship — shape above, footage below, both moving together — is the entire effect.
Because the shape grows to follow where she has already been, the walker herself becomes the edge of the transition. The reveal is not a line sweeping across the screen; it is the exact silhouette of the space the subject has cleared.
Shotcut does the compositing. Glaxnimate, a separate vector animation program launched from inside it, does the drawing. They exchange nothing but a saved .rawr file, which is why Reload matters.
The shape is drawn by hand, so its boundary is only as accurate as your clicking. A busy, moving subject against a busy background — a street scene like this one — forgives a lot. A clean, slow silhouette against a flat wall does not.

This video carries no chapter list of its own, so the sections below were worked out by reading the video’s frames end to end. Each stop is anchored to the exact second of the frame shown with it, which is why the timestamps land on ten-second marks. Click any screencap or timestamp to play that section from that second, right here in the card. Quotes are transcribed verbatim from the audio.
Every name and value below was read off the frames of the video rather than taken from the narration. Where the video never shows a number, none is given here. The heading of each step says which of the two programs you are in.
One clip with a subject that moves across the frame, and one clip to be revealed behind it. The reveal clip should be the longer of the two.
The player status bar in the early frames reads “Proxy and preview scaling are ON at 360p” and later “Preview scaling is ON at 720p”. Both are playback-performance settings and neither changes the export.
Timeline menu → Add Video Track, twice. Drag the subject clip onto V2 and the reveal clip onto V1. The top track is the one that gets filtered; the bottom track is never touched.
Park the playhead at the end of the shorter clip, press S to split the longer one there, select the overage and delete it. Purely housekeeping, but it makes the rest far easier to read.
Scrub the top clip to the first frame where the subject starts to clear the area you want revealed and press S. Step forward to the frame where she is completely out of that area and press S again. The middle section is the only part that gets a mask.
Ben steps between frames with the left and right arrow keys rather than dragging the playhead — single-frame accuracy matters here, because the first and last shapes have to match the frames on either side of the cut.
With that middle section selected, open Filters, click + and search mask. Choose Mask: Draw (Glaxnimate). Nothing changes on screen yet.
The filter as applied, before any file exists. The panel reads Click New... or Open... to use this filter, Invert and Reverse are unticked, and Operation is Overwrite. Frame at 4:10.
Click New.... A dialog titled New Animation File opens. Name the file and save. Save as type is left on All Files (*); Glaxnimate supplies its own .rawr extension.
Saving launches Glaxnimate as a separate window with its own menu bar (Layers, Object, Path, Text, Plugins, Help). The document is pre-sized to the project and the selected footage is loaded behind the canvas to trace over.
Pressing play inside Glaxnimate runs the reference footage at what Ben calls “super speed” — it is playing one document frame per video frame, not at the clip’s real rate. That is normal and nothing to fix.
Third tool down the left toolbar: the bézier pen. The toolbar order is select, node edit, bézier pen, freehand pencil, rectangle, ellipse, star, text, colour picker, fill bucket. With the pen active, Tool Options shows a Create group.
The last button on the timeline toolbar, after the first / previous / next / last frame controls. Its tooltip reads Record. Switch it on and the status bar changes to Recording Keyframes.

On frame 0, click point to point around the area that should become transparent. The shape appears in the Layers list as Path 1. Then press the right arrow key to advance one frame, switch to the node edit tool (second down), and drag the existing points to the new position — do not draw a fresh shape. Repeat to the end.
Late in the pass. The shape has grown to cover nearly the whole canvas because by the final frame nearly the whole screen should show the lower clip. Frame at 8:10. The middle of this process is fast-forwarded in the video, so no single frame shows the full sequence of edits.
Ben’s own guidance on the points: you do not have to move all of them. Drag the ones that define the moving edge and push the rest out of the way.
File → Save, confirmed by File saved in the status bar, then close the window. Back in Shotcut the filter panel now names the file beside the New... and Open... buttons — but it is still holding the old contents. Press Reload.
The two applications share nothing but that file. Any time you go back into Glaxnimate with Edit... and change something, you have to save there and press Reload here again.
On the first playback the mask is the wrong way round: the shape you drew is what remains and everything else vanishes. Tick Invert and it flips. Finally, delete the last section of the top clip so the sequence ends on the revealed footage.
Expect the inversion. It is not a mistake in the drawing — it is just which side of the path the filter treats as opaque.
Read directly off the frames of the video. This effect has remarkably few numbers in it — almost all of the work is geometry you draw by hand — so the table is mostly names, paths and states.

Two things on this page are observations rather than instructions. The Glaxnimate version is never displayed, so it is recorded here as unknown rather than guessed from the Shotcut build. And in the frames after the fast-forwarded keyframing the document node in the Layers list reads Glax02 while the title bar still reads New Glax.rawr — the file named in the title bar is the one that is saved and reloaded.
Machine transcribed from the video audio. Spoken phrasing is left as-is; only the product name Whisper mangled — it hears Glaxnimate as “GlaxonMate” and “Glaxdimate” — has been corrected. Every timestamp plays the video in the hero from that second.
In this tutorial, I will demonstrate how to do the Wipe Mask transition using the new
Glaxnimate tool on Shotcut. So stay tuned.
This tutorial is done on Shotcut version 22.12.21.
Please make sure you have at least this version otherwise you may not have the
necessary features like Glaxnimate to be able to execute this technique. So in this
technique what I’m trying to do is as this woman is walking across the screen
she then exposes the video underneath it. And so the first thing we need to do
is gather our materials. So in this technique I’m only going to need two
videos. The first one is the walking video and then the second one is the video
that gets exposed underneath. Let’s prepare our files. The next thing we’re
going to need are two tracks. So if you go to this icon here and click it, what
we’re going to do is we’re going to choose Add Video Track and then we’re
going to do it again. Click it again, Add Video Track. So we now have two
tracks on our timeline stacked on top of each other. The next thing we’re going to
do is we’re going to drag the walking video on the top track and then we’re
going to drag the Times Square video on the bottom track. And this is what
you’re going to have. And again we don’t have a mask yet so nothing is going to be
exposed from underneath. Let’s go ahead and clean up our timeline so that the
two videos are of equal length. So all I’m going to do is go to the very end of
the first video and put my cursor there and then I’m going to click S on the
keyboard and then I’m going to delete the overage. So now you have two
equal length videos on top of each other. That just makes the timeline a lot cleaner.
Now what I’m going to do is I’m going to search the top video for the first frame
that we’re going to use to edit which is probably here is the first time
something is exposed in this area here. So what I’m going to do is I’m again
going to click S on the keyboard to create a split and then I’m going to move the
right arrow also on the keyboard to the very end until the screen is totally
clear which is about right there. And again with the cursor there I’m going
to click S again. And so this section here that I’ve highlighted is the area
that we’re going to create a mask for so that this bottom video is exposed. And
this is the part that we’re going to send over to Glaxnimate. While I still have
this area highlighted what I’m going to do is I’m going to go to filters and
then I’m going to look for mask draw Glaxnimate. And when you choose that
nothing’s going to happen. The first thing you’re going to need to do is you’re
going to need to create a new Glaxnimate file. So I’m just going to call this one
new Glax and save. And what it’s going to do is it’s going to immediately launch
Glaxnimate right on your screen. Now Glaxnimate is actually a totally
different software that’s integrated into Shotcut. So whenever you want to access
Glaxnimate what you need to do is you need to launch Glaxnimate. So it doesn’t
exist inside of Shotcut. And so this is what it looks like initially. And so now
if you notice there’s actually a timeline inside Glaxnimate. And so if I press play
it then plays the video. It actually plays it in super speed. So the first
thing we’re going to need to do is draw out the mask of the area that we need exposed.
And so first select this tool over here. And when you select this tool you need to make sure
that both the fill and stroke check boxes are checked. But before you get started
what you need to do is you need to go to the timeline area here and select this icon here
that signifies record. Basically what you’re going to do is you’re going to record the keyframes.
So once that’s selected then you can go back into this tool and start making your selection.
Again we’re only going to select the area of the first frame that we want to disappear.
So what we want to do is we want to cut that area out so that when we place it on top of the other
video it then shows through. So that is the first keyframe. And so when I advance to the next
keyframe what I’m going to need to do is I’m going to need to go to this icon here.
And I’m then going to need to modify
the previous selection that I just made. And so all you have to do is select the little squares
so then fill the next section.
And again you don’t necessarily need to use every single one
because maybe the previous selection might have been more complex.
So what I’m going to do is I’m going to move these other boxes out of the way and then
have that selection. So that’s kind of the general area that I want exposed in the next frame.
I’m then going to move the frame over one. And the way I’m doing it, the way I’m moving it
is I’m either choosing the left arrow on the keyboard or the right arrow. So
choosing the right arrow advances it to the next frame. So now we’re on the third frame. So again
I’m going to move these little squares here to make sure that the area
that I want cut out is covered.
You need to move this to make sure
that some of the selections.
Okay, so this is the next keyframe. And so I’m going to spare you
the boring process of me keyframing every single one of these frames
by just fast forwarding through this process.
Okay, so I’ve now finished recording all my keyframes.
So the last thing I need to do is save the file. So I’m just going to go to File,
Save. And after that, all I need to do is close. So once I close, we’re now back to Shotcut.
So now that we’re back in Shotcut, the first thing we need to do is we need to make sure
that the file we saved on Glaxnimate is updated in Shotcut. So all you need to do is go to
this button and click Reload. And once you do that, the file is now updated. And so I’m going to play
the result of what we did on Glaxnimate. The one thing that’s weird though is that once I’ve loaded
Shotcut again, it’s not doing what I intended it to do. And that’s because what it’s doing
is it’s showing the opposite of the mask that I just created. But there’s an easy solution to this.
All you need to do is go to this checkbox here and click Invert. And it inverts the selection.
And now it shows and highlights exactly what you want it to do.
The last thing I need to do, once I confirm that it’s doing what it’s supposed to do,
is I just need to go to the very end here, choose this selection here and delete it.
So once I play, it then completes the exercise. And that’s it. And so the final result is this.
